Why Podcasts Are David Versus Goliath

Anonymous bloggers might be able to rise to prominence out of nowhere but cracking the podcast charts is an altogether harder endeavour. Of the top 24 iTunes podcasts in the UK, only one - "pets" at number 21 - is not connected to a brand.

Oliver Mann and Helen Zaltzman, creators of the Answer Me This Podcast, and guests on tonight's Sky.Com News on-air and online at 7.30pm - explain why their quest to hit the podcast big-time led them to Luxembourg.

"As an independent podcast, Answer Me This! is competing against such broadcasting titans as Russell Brand, Ricky Gervais and Chris Evans; since beginning last January, Answer Me This! has bobbed around the iTunes charts, and even reached as high as number 21 in the Comedy Top 100, becoming the highest-rated independent podcast in the UK.

But the top 20 is perennially jammed full of slickly-produced celebrity-fronted shows by the BBC, Channel 4 Radio and HBO, many of which are compilations from TV and radio shows with audiences of millions; and against those, we didn't stand a hope in hell of getting any higher.

So, greedy for more chart success, however meaningless, we turned our attentions to more vulnerable targets.

Thanks to some sort of tax wheeze, the whole of iTunes is registered to an address in Luxembourg, making Luxembourg the smallest country in the world to have its own iTunes store.  It was a David and Goliath situation, if Goliath was really not very big. Could we...?"
